There are many different materials to be used when it comes to decking boards. They are separated into two types of decking boards, PVC and Composite decking boards. Hallmark Sundecks are specialists in all kinds of sundeck applications.

PVC Decking Boards & Composite Decking Boards

PVC decking boards and composite decking boards are two popular materials used for outdoor decking projects. Here are some key differences between the two:

  • Material composition:

PVC decking is made entirely of plastic, while composite decking is made of a combination of wood fibres and plastic.

  • Durability:

PVC decking is highly resistant to moisture, fading, staining, and scratching, whereas composite decking is more susceptible to staining and scratching.

  • Heat retention:

PVC decking tends to absorb less heat than composite decking, making it a more comfortable option for bare feet in hot weather. This also means that composite board require can require an expansion gap whereas PVC board do not.

  • Cost:

Composite decking is generally more expensive than PVC decking.

  • Sustainability:

PVC decking is made from non-renewable fossil fuels and is not recyclable, while composite decking may contain recycled materials and can be recycled at the end of its life.

Overall, both PVC and composite decking boards have their advantages and disadvantages, and the choice between the two will depend on personal preferences, budget, and intended use.

Subframes

A decking subframe is a structure that lies beneath the decking boards. This is used to keep it supported and provide the base that your boards are attached to. A professionally built subframe made from high-quality materials is vital for a long-lasting deck. The decking subframes are primarily made of two different materials; Timber and Steel, both of which have advantages and disadvantages.

Timber Subframes

Advantages:

• Timber subframes are generally more affordable compared to steel subframes.

• Timber is a renewable resource and environmentally friendly.

• Timber subframes are relatively easy to work with and can be cut and shaped to fit any design or configuration.

Disadvantages:

• Timber subframes are vulnerable to rot, decay, and insect infestation, which can shorten their lifespan and require maintenance and replacement (although Hallmark Sundecks exclusively uses pressure-treated tanalised timber).

• Timber subframes can be affected by moisture and weather conditions, which can cause warping and twisting.

Steel Subframes

Advantages:

• Steel subframes are highly durable and resistant to rot, decay, and insect infestation.

• Steel subframes are strong and provide reliable support for decking, allowing for a longer lifespan.

• Steel subframes are low maintenance and do not require painting or staining.

Disadvantages:

• Steel subframes are more expensive compared to timber subframes.

• Steel is a non-renewable resource and less environmentally friendly.

• Steel subframes are difficult to cut and shape on-site and require specialized tools and expertise for installation.

Ultimately, the choice between Timber and Steel subframes will depend on various factors such as budget, location, intended use, and personal preferences.
